RSVP now! The People's Policy: Holding Big Tech Accountable

CSM LIVE next Monday, March 2nd on YouTube - 5:30pm MT (7:30pm ET)

Hey everyone—

Next Monday, I’m hosting a live conversation, “The People’s Policy,” about how we can shape the future of Big Tech accountability at the local, state, and national level. I'd love for you to join us—RVSP here.

Big Tech is lobbying hard at every level of government, pushing to expand data center development, pitching public agencies on discriminatory and harmful algorithmic systems, and trying to dodge accountability for surveillance pricing schemes that undermine fair prices and wages. The need for a real alternative policy vision couldn't be clearer.

Join us on Monday, March 2nd at 5:30pm MT (7:30pm ET) for an online conversation about how we—as communities, localities, policymakers, and movements—can use legal and policy tools to advance a people-first approach to Big Tech accountability.

You’ll hear from speakers working on the ground in Colorado and nationally to hold Big Tech accountable and build a grassroots movement that pushes back on corporate power:

  • David Seligman, Executive Director of Towards Justice and Democratic candidate for Colorado Attorney General
  • Alvaro Bedoya, former Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission and founding director of the Center on Privacy and Technology at Georgetown University Law Center
  • Elliott “El’Bo” Awatt, Driver Organizer with Colorado Independent Drivers United

We'll be livestreaming the conversation on The Maybe’s YouTube channel and will share the recording afterward for anyone who can't make it live. RSVP here to receive the livestream link, and we’ll make sure you get the recording too.

Hope to see you there!

Alix

🎧 DEI: The Season Finale Hey there readers and listeners, Earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg announced sweeping changes to Meta’s content policies and also made internal changes to their DEI teams — in that they completely got rid of them. Make no mistake: despite their ‘free speech’ claims, the content moderation will continue. They will still take down pro-Palestinian speech, they will still leave up hate speech. But in a complete reversal of some core content moderation policies — such as...

Our questions of the year Hey there— I know this is likely one of many year-end reflection emails in your inbox, so thanks for even opening! In our final newsletter of 2024 we wanted to center the questions we were most driven by this year, and we’ll wrap this up with our 2025 plans and opportunities to work with you. What’s been on our radar in 2024? The question: Who are the dominant voices in AI coverage, and how are they shaping the narrative? The action: We dug deep into this with our...

🎧 Technology’s role in the climate crisis Hello all — just a quick podcast update from us. We’ve recently wrapped up a miniseries called Net0++. We interviewed activists, researchers, a journalist, and even an expert in concrete (yep) — to help us explore how the tech industry’s business model is worsening the climate crisis. In Big Dirty Data Centres, we heard from Jenna Ruddock and Boxi Wu, who shared their work on data centre expansion — which has ramped up with the AI hype — and how local...
